New Nuclear in Europe: 2030 Outlook

Although many European Union (EU) countries are currently planning to build new nuclear power plants, reactor numbers are likely to decline in the region over the next few years. This World Nuclear Association report examines the plans for new nuclear reactors in the EU, as well as in other European countries, and assesses the likelihood of them coming to fruition.

Several EU countries are strongly anti-nuclear, whereas others understand that nuclear power has to feature in the energy mix if the region's ambitious emissions and security of supply targets are to be achieved. The prospects for new nuclear build are affected by each individual country's economy, energy resources and, most importantly, politics. These factors are analysed in the context of every planned European nuclear plant to give a realistic picture of how much nuclear power will feature in Europe, and particularly the EU, by around 2030.
